Critical Objectives

These goals were developed by the American Meat Science Association Board in September, 2014 and frame the plan of work for 2015-2017. All of these goals and objectives should be viewed within the framework of AMSA’s strategic plan.

Knowledge Source

AMSA will be increasingly recognized by the global meat science community to be the primary resource for assimilating and delivering relevant and timely knowledge.

The next steps in achieving this goal are:

  • Take the Reciprocal Meat Conference to the next level to include Diversity of programming reflecting the broader meat industry
    • New technologies that further attendee engagement
    • Diversity of a larger attendee base
    • Expanded platforms for information dissemination and professional development
  • Define/set standards for meat science research and communication, including
    • Ongoing development of research protocol standardization
    • Terminology and category definitions, for example – what is “processed meats”
  • Hone our processes and methods to increase speed and frequency of delivery of new knowledge through mechanisms like webinars, white papers and scientific program development. Further strengthen AMSA’s scientific integrity by standardizing review processes.

Industry and Academic Leadership

AMSA will be sought out as a valued partner and leading authority in meat science and technology

The next steps in achieving this goal are:

  • Harness the work done at RMC 2014 to develop research priorities for the meat science discipline, maintaining the list and integrating it with the global meat science community
  • Continue developing new relationships and alliances with relevant organizations through recruitment of new sustaining partners and collaboration with new program partners. Look closely at organizations and companies that interact directly with the consumer (retail, foodservice) as well as allied industry organizations.
  • Continue becoming the go-to source for meat science information, particularly for the media. Initiatives to include:
    • Outreach to media through the new AMSA website
    • Expanding the outreach to members with ready-to-use information on current topics
  • Facilitate industry and academic partnership, particularly in the areas of funding and professional development resources
  • Include targeted professional development, including leadership skills development, communication and teamwork in AMSAs professional and student educational programming.

Membership and Community

AMSA’s membership community will consistently grow in numbers, diversity of expertise, and in levels of engagement.

The next steps in achieving this goal are:

  • Increase member engagement by developing and executing a plan for committee participation, networking opportunities and interactive programs that will foster professional development in our membership
  • Increase diversity of the membership in AMSA
  • Geographic diversity
  • Representative of the entire meat/protein chain
  • Greater number of institutions represented

Organization

AMSA’s organizational structure will be aligned with its strategic goals and will have the resources in place to meet those goals.

The next steps in achieving this goal are:

  • Expand the role of the AMSA Educational Foundation to enable development of new programs and services.
  • Continuously review the role of committees in the organization, working towards better defined roles and purpose and more fully engaging committee members.
