Foundation Joins #GivingTuesday Movement

Nov 16, 2016

Giving Tuesday - November 29, 2016Thanksgiving is immediately followed by days of stuff-getting: the frenzy of consumer hand-to-hand combat known as Black Friday, which has spilled over to Cyber Monday. The splurge and binge of this weekend creates the perfect conditions for a change of pace. We need a day of giving, not just heartfelt thanks, but also something more tangible. This year, look for #GivingTuesday and AMSA on November 29.

The #GivingTuesday movement raised over $117 million online nationally last year for all kinds of charities, harnessing the potential of social media and generosity to bring about real change that people care deeply about. Last year, #GivingTuesday started a giving rush for the AMSA Educational Foundation that topped $25,000 by the end of the year. It added up to become the highest last quarter giving in the history of our Foundation. This year, the foundation trustees have made a goal of raising 35,000 dollars by the end of the year, starting with the momentum of #GivingTuesday. Whether given to designated funds like mentor or the new legacy recognitions or to unrestricted funds like the Innovation Fund, donations fuel scholarships, student development activities, opportunities for young professionals and making reliable scientific information available to the public and to other scientists.

The foundation's goal is to nurture the people and resources needed so that our science can break through current limitations. We desire to make it possible for the world to enjoy safe, affordable, abundant, nutritious meat that improves health and longevity and productivity. The AMSA Educational Foundation has the vision to expand the recruitment and development of students and young professionals to meet this goal. Eventually, we dream of being able to fund meat science research and expand collaboration to solve problems relating to sustainable meat supply. Together with AMSA members and friends, we are all working to strengthen careers that help feed the world.

Save the date-November 29-and look for more information. On #GivingTuesday we can join the movement to offer our time, talent, and resources to address the challenges in meat science and fuel the changes that we are passionate about. What we accomplish together will make a real difference in the lives of people and in the world's ability to nourish a growing population.
