Jim Riemann, Ph.D.

The American Meat Science Association is proud to announce the formation of the Jim Riemann Mentor Recognition Fund to advance initiatives and activities that recognize, support and develop current and future professionals committed to meat science education.

Dr. M. James “Jim” Riemann dedicated his life and career to encouraging and developing people. Throughout his career in teaching, research and business, Jim emulated professionalism, servant leadership, innovation and integrity. Jim’s worldwide leadership positively influenced the industry and the people he served, starting with more than a decade at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in teaching and research. At Excel (now Cargill), he fostered the research and development team and helped invent and patent the steam pasteurization process still used as a food safety intervention today. Jim continued his leadership at Certified Angus Beef, where he energized the team and brought greater value to ranchers and global business partners, guiding them to elevate the quality of the cattle produced and the beef delivered to chefs and consumers around the world. Jim was also actively engaged in service to AMSA and the overall agricultural community.

While Jim is often identified as an authority on beef quality and safety, his most notable characteristic was his ability to connect with people on a personal level. This was truly his signature attribute, carrying through to every interaction and setting the tone for each person to be better as a leader in business, family and community. 

The lives Jim touched are his enduring legacy. Jim’s passion for teaching helped generations of young professionals and scientists grow and succeed, so we respectfully ask for your consideration in honoring Jim by donating to this important meat science education initiative. With Jim’s wife, Nancy, and his family, it is our hope that this mentorship inspires future generations of meat science educators and students.
