The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) will conduct monthly live educational webinars highlighting all the services the Livestock and Poultry Program (L&P) provided to the Meat and Poultry Industry. During this webinar the L&P Program will give an overview of beef grading highlighted services and standards as well as value added from stakeholders’ perspective.

Presenters:

BuckyDr. Bucky Gwartney is an International Marketing Specialist with the USDA, responsible for development and oversight of meat standards, including the beef yield and quality grades. He also serves as a technical expert on many meat related activities within USDA and as our representative in several international standards organizations. Dr. Gwartney received his B.S. from Oklahoma State University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Science/Meat Science from the University of Nebraska.  He has served as past president of the AMSA and as a past Muscle Foods Division Chair at the Institute of Food Technology. Dr. Gwartney was part of the research team that received the International Meat Secretariat Prize for Meat Science and Technology and is an AMSA Fellow and an OSU Graduate of Distinction.  

Joseph.BarksdaleMr. Joe Barksdale is a Supervisory Marketing Specialist with USDA’s Livestock and Poultry Program. He graduated from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX and has over 30 years of experience with the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service in the application of the U.S. standards to determine quality grades. Mr. Barksdale currently supervises the USDA voluntary grading activities in plants in Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma, and works closely with USDA’s Market News to execute CME live cattle deliveries in the Texas Panhandle and eastern New Mexico. In 2015, Mr. Barksdale served as the technical representative for USDA as Mexico established the country’s own official beef standards.

Derek Vote PictureDr. Derek Vote works for JBS USA Food Company located in Greeley, Colorado as the head of grading operations for the Fed Beef Division.  Derek’s primary responsibilities include overseeing the grading process across JBS’s Greeley, CO, Grand Island, NE, Cactus, TX, and Hyrum, UT fed cattle processing plants.  Additional responsibilities include working with the sales and marketing department in developing and supporting JBS’s branded beef programs as well the Information Technology department in implementing technology and capturing data to support business functions. Derek received a Ph.D. in 2005 and a M.S. in 2003 in Animal Science specializing in Meat Science from Colorado State University where his research focused on vision grading of beef and beef palatability.  He also received a B.S. in 1998 in Animal Science and Agricultural Business from Iowa State University.
