Why do you want to be on the AMSA Student Membership Board of Directors and what qualifications make you the best candidate for the position?

Serving on the AMSA student board of directors would allow me the opportunity to provide leadership to an elite professional organization. I have greatly benefited and grown professionally from my involvement in the organization and believe it is time to give back to future meat scientists. I believe I can offer new and innovative ideas that will further enhance the programming offered by the Student Board of Directors. I believe the AMSA Student Board serves an important role in providing students opportunities to engage in science, enhance leadership skills, and develop invaluable networks with fellow students and industry representatives. Student board members serve as an extension of the student membership and I believe it is essential to take input from the membership and gear activities and programing to the needs of the student membership.

2020 marks my sixth year of membership in AMSA, which has afforded me tremendous experiences in meat science. I have had the opportunity to be on a meat judging team, coach meat judging teams, attend and host workshops, and now serve as a mentor to undergraduate students. In addition, my experiences at Colorado State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and now the University of Idaho have provided the opportunity to better understand the diversity in universities and various needs of students from an organization like AMSA. The variety of meat science activities I have been involved in allows me to bring a broadened understanding of the importance of the opportunities available to students through AMSA. In addition, my diverse educational background brings perspective from small and large meat science schools. I think it is a unique opportunity for the Northwest to be represented on the board.

What does your AMSA membership mean to you?

AMSA membership means finding a place to excel and discover your passion. The AMSA offers a unique slate of opportunities for students to actively partake in the meat industry and develop tremendous networking opportunities with industry professionals. Programing provided by the AMSA is uniquely situated to serve an array of students. Active participation sets students up for dynamic careers in the meat and agricultural industries. Involvement in AMSA has allowed me the opportunity to interact with fellow students and industry professionals across the United States and beyond. I believe there is a place for everyone in the AMSA and as a student board member I would work to ensure that the student board is continually enhancing programing and opportunities to serve the dynamic student membership.
