AMSA 71ST RMC MEAT & NUTRITION – SUSTAINING HEALTHY PROTEIN SOURCES SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED

AMSA is pleased to announce, Drs. Wayne Campbell, Eric Berg, and Rody Hawkins will be the featured speakers at the AMSA 71st Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) Symposium entitled “Meat & Nutrition – Sustaining Healthy Protein Sources,” on Tuesday, June 26 in Kansas City, MO. This symposium will take a look into how the new U.S. Dietary Guidelines were developed, emerging research on protein in the diet, and why meat is a source of essential amino acids to help us grow and stay strong.
The featured presentations include:

U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Health: Getting to the Meat of the Matter: The global recommendation to reduce red meat consumption for health may be inconsistent with emerging research suggesting that unprocessed red meat consumption is neutral to cardiovascular disease development and associated risk factors. Dr. Wayne Campbell, Professor at Purdue University will re-evaluate the scientific foundations of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines on consuming red meat with consideration to definitions of red meat, sources of meat, degree of meat processing, and usual versus recommended eating patterns.

Can Meat Consumption Improve Global Quality of Life?: The World Health Organization Global Nutrition Targets 2025 identifies stunting, anemia, low birth weight, childhood overweight, and wasting as policy targets for “action and catalyzing global change.” In adults, the goal is to “halt the rise and prevalence of: adult overweight, adult diabetes (high blood sugar) and adult obesity.”  Dr. Eric Berg, Professor at North Dakota State University will address the important role red meat could play in improving global quality of life by meeting nutrient deficiencies associated with these adverse health conditions.

How are Plants Competing with Meat for the Center of the Plate:  Dr. Rody Hawkins, President & Chief Executive Officer at Improved Nature LLC will discuss how the plant protein market has grown to a $5 billion market in 2017 and has a growth rate that is twice the market average.  While this is still a small fraction of the current meat market, what are the factors driving this growth and what are the market and nutritional implications.

The AMSA 71st RMC will be held June 24-27, 2018 at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri. For more information regarding the AMSA 71st RMC please visit: http://www.meatscience.org/rmc or contact Deidrea Mabry 1-800-517-AMSA ext. 12.
