2025 Dr. Gary C. Smith Scholarship Recipients

A special thank you to the Bellinger Foundation for supporting our students with $1,000.00 scholarships for earning high individual at selected AMSA Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contests.  Students cannot receive the scholarship more than one time in a competitive season.

Kyla Beck

Kyla Beck was born in San Antonio, Texas to David and Keli Beck. Her family ran a commercial cow-calf operation in Cibolo, Texas, where Kyla’s passion for agriculture began. Her family moved the operation to Seguin, Texas in 2013, where she lived until she graduated high school and moved to College Station, Texas to attend Texas A&M University in August of 2022. Kyla has always been deeply rooted in agriculture, through showing market steers, competing at the national level for numerous FFA events, and still maintaining a vital role on her family’s operation. Her skills gained on the ranch and in the steer, barn is still useful today as she is extremely involved within her college. Kyla is currently a Junior studying Agribusiness at Texas A&M, in which she is heavily involved. Kyla’s passion for meat judging in high school was easily translated at Texas A&M, as she was on the National Champion Collegiate Wool Judging team in 2023 and is currently a member of the 2024 Texas A&M Meat Judging team, in which her and her team were undefeated in the spring season. Kyla thoroughly enjoys being able to see a crucial side of the beef industry and looks forward to learning even more during her time in packing plants across the nation. Kyla plans to pursue law school in order to eventually defend and protect the beef industry from the legal side. Meat judging has had a crucial impact on Kyla’s life for the better part of 7 years. Kyla has utilized all the facets of the industry to understand all sides of the beef industry, which will serve her well in the future. Kyla will forever be thankful for the opportunity to experience intercollegiate Meat Judging and will cherish the memories with her teammates forever. The Gary C. Smith scholarship will assist Kyla in the completion of her last 3 semesters at Texas A&M University, where she will then take the next steps to attend law school.
