Describe how your background and qualifications would help you be an effective leader of AMSA.

I am a program specialist in meat science at Iowa State University where my primary duties include the development and execution of our extensive short course programs for the meat industry. I have experience collaborating with academia to provide scientific based resources along with industry professionals ranging from equipment and ingredient suppliers to engineers.

I have been involved with AMSA for over 20 years serving on the Pork 101 committee as well as hosting the course yearly. Additionally, I served as the host committee chair for the 75th RMC held in Des Moines in 2022. I have served on several local and statewide boards over my career including chair of Special Olympics Iowa, Heartland Senior Services of Story County, and Story County Early Childhood which I also served as chair.

What is your vision for AMSA in ten years?

AMSA plays a vital role in advancing the meat science industry by promoting research, education, and collaboration among professionals. AMSA should remain at the forefront of meat science research, supporting innovation in areas such as meat quality, safety, and sustainability by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between science and industry to drive breakthroughs in these fields.

AMSA should continue to support and promote comprehensive education and training opportunities for meat industry professionals. This includes workshops, seminars, and online courses covering topics such as food safety, animal welfare, and emerging technologies.

The association should continue to collaborate with industry stakeholders to develop and promote standards and best practices that ensure the highest quality and safety of meat products. This involves staying updated on regulations, technological advancements, and consumer preferences.

By focusing on these principles and initiatives, AMSA can continue to serve as a leader in meat science, driving innovation, education, and excellence in the meat industry for years to come.
