Travis Arp, Ph.D.

Director Candidate

JBS

Describe how your background and qualifications would help you be an effective leader of AMSA.

Dr. Arp has a master’s and Ph.D. in Meat Science from the University of Florida and Colorado State University, respectively, and has been involved with AMSA for over 15 years since his time as a graduate student. Following graduate school, Dr. Arp worked for 10 years in multiple technical roles at the U.S. Meat Export Federation and is now a Technical Services Director for JBS Foods in their fed and regional beef business units. While at USMEF, much of his role focused on technical education on meat science topics to international audiences, including importers, distributors, end users and consumers; while also working to expand market access for U.S. beef, pork, and lamb exports around the world. Dr. Arp’s international background will provide unique perspective for AMSA, particularly as the organization looks to have broader influence not only within the U.S. industry but gain stronger global influence in the field of meat science.

What is your vision for AMSA in 10 years?

At its core, AMSA’s goals are to continue to advance the field of meat science through academic and scientific leadership, and work to develop the next generation of meat industry talent. While AMSA’s objectives will largely stay the same, the strategies for achieving these goals will need to evolve over the next decade. I hope to contribute to this evolution and work with AMSA leadership to continue to expand AMSA’s reach within the industry. This would include continuing to expand AMSA’s membership, broadening their international reach in the industry, and evolving their activities to continue to be current and relevant to their stakeholders. I anticipate the meat industry to look different in the next ten years as it works to become more efficient, productive, and meet changing consumer expectations. It will be incumbent upon AMSA and its leadership to not only keep pace with these changes but be a leader in this evolution.
