AMSA Announces Speakers on Improving Productivity – Meat Processing Modernization

HormelThe American Meat Science Association (AMSA) is pleased to announce, Mr. Jason Strong and Ms. Veronica Nigh will be the featured speakers in the concurrent symposium entitled “Improving Productivity – Meat Processing Modernization” on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 during the 66th International Congress of Meat Science and Technology (ICoMST) and the AMSA 73rd Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) exclusively virtual meeting. This session will be sponsored by Hormel Foods Group.

Jason Strong headshot  (1)Increasing the Efficiency and Productivity in the Red Meat Industry through Sensing and Automation: Like other countries, the Australian red meat value chain faces significant challenges in sustaining efficiency and productivity to ensure global competitiveness is maintained. Mr. Jason Strong, Managing Director, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) Limited, will discuss things MLA has identified ‘process sensing and automation’ as a strategic imperative for innovation in the Australian red meat processing industry. In doing so, MLA has taken a highly collaborative approach since 2005, working with industry partners, technology providers and even the industry of other countries to develop capability and new technologies. The technologies developed have delivered significant productivity benefits from yield, quality and throughput increases, as well as labor productivity. Value propositions on outcomes have fueled industry awareness to, and acceptance of, investment in automation that is resulting in continued adoption. Digital data collection and analysis from automation systems also provide objective measures for improved decision making along the entire chain to enable whole-of-chain transformation.

Veronica Nigh-4x5When Complete Automation Can’t Be Achieved and the Domestic Workforce is Uninterested: The Role of Agricultural Labor Visa Programs in U.S. Food and Agriculture: Employers in U.S. food and agriculture have long experienced difficulty in obtaining domestic workers who are willing and able to fill the physically demanding jobs required by the sector. Yet, for many prospective workers from other countries, these jobs present real economic opportunities. Government sponsored temporary worker programs can help bridge the employment gap, but existing programs are increasingly rigid and burdensome. In this session Ms. Veronica Nigh, Economist, American Farm Bureau Federation will cover what lessons can be learned from current programs that could help improve the system for employers and employees alike.
